  16. INSTALLATION:
  17. ============
  18. To install "PLAYMATES OF THE YEAR THE 80'S", use File Manager to run the
  19. setup.exe program in the \RUNTIME directory on the CD-ROM.  The setup program
  20. will copy the Video for Windows (runtime) include MPLAYER.EXE to your
  21. hard drive.

  24. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
  25. ===================
  26. To use "PLAYMATES OF THE YEAR THE 80'S", you should have a 386 or better CPU
  27. with 8-bit (256 color), 15-bit (32k color), 16-bit (64k color), or 24-bit
  28. (Truecolor) graphics, a sound card, Microsoft Windows 3.1 and DOS 5.0 or 6.0,
  29. and a mouse.

  32. IMPROVING VIDEO PLAYBACK PERFORMANCE:
  33. ====================================
  34. 1. Upgrade Your Video Card.
  35.   A graphics (256 color minimum) accelerator card can improve video playback.
  36. You will see maximum performance, measured by frames per second, in a 256-color
  37. mode. Modes with greater than 256 colors provide better color at a slower
  38. frames per second rate. Placing the video card into a system using either PCI
  39. or VESA Local bus will also improve perform. The recommended mode is
  40. 640x480x256, 640x480x32k or 640x480x64k.

  42. 2. Update Your Graphics Drivers.
  43.   Make sure that you have the most corrent graphics drivers availabe. Call you
  44. graphics vendor or check your documentaion to find out how you can get the
  45. corrent drives.

  47. 3. Upgrade Your Microprocessor (CPU).
  48.   For example, a computer based on the intel 486 microprocessor benefits from
  49. install an OverDrive(TM) processor or upgrading to a Pentium(TM) process.

  52. VIDEO PROBLEMS:
  53. ==============
  54. Some high-resolution video cards require updated driver software for 
  55. operation of Video for Windows.  If you experience color display problems,
  56. Please contact your video board manufacturer to see if newer driver software 
  57. is available.

  59. Make sure you are using the most recent versions of HIMEM.SYS, EMM386.EXE,
  60. and SMARTDRV.EXE.  The copies that came with DOS 6.0 are the most recent, and
  61. Windows 3.1 files are better than DOS 5.0 files.  Your config.sys should
  62. have something like the following:

  65. DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
  66. DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM NOEMS

  68. Your autoexec.bat should have something like:

  70. C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE 1024 1024       (if you have 8 MB or more memory)
  71. C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE 1024 512        (if you have less memory)

  74. MEMORY PROBLEMS:
  75. ===============
  76. Video for Windows and Windows 3.1 is very memory hungry.  The best way to
  77. speed-up video quality and display is to have at least 8 MB RAM.  if you have 
  78. less, make sure you do not have EMM386 allocating any expanded memory.  Also,
  79. you should have SMARTDRV using as little memory as possible (512K cache).  The
  80. biggest performance improvement other than upgrading to a 486 is to have more
  81. memory.

  83. You can also use the 386 enhanced Virtual Memory settings to create a permanent
  84. swap file.  This seems to improve performance slightly, but more RAM is better.
